Set in Paris, beneath the dimly lit Pont Alexandre III, on a full moon, Galliano presented “the underbelly of Paris” - the clothing construction, staging, choreography, makeup & hair - it was drunk, tattered, surreal, possessed - the aftermath of WW1, with the Belle Epoque in the rearview mirror. Even though this is not my particular aesthetic, I am drawn to the fullness of the 360 degree effort. Mesmerizing. Like a great interior, the visual interest arises from novel contrasts, and showcases how the transporting effects of fashion can be subtle, too. Completed in 1900, it ceased operations in 1968 and in the years since it’s surrounding structures have fallen victim to the precarious sandy coast it was built upon. Expected to fall into the sea by 2023, the government spent almost $1,000,000 to preserve it, relocating it inland. Serving no function, JaJa Architects converted the tower into an installation that plays homage to its purpose. The mirror prism at the peak subverts the spaces original function by reflecting light inwards, casting a kaleidoscopic prism into the tower. I love everything about this project: it speaks to preservation, appreciation, and adaptation - quiet but necessary themes. I urge you to explore more here. His most recent self-published book, Things Become Other Things, is a stunning compendium of his decade of walking the Kii peninsula, with short reflective essay-ish passages and poignant, rich photography. A fantastic episode of Not Past It really illuminated how the Santa we’ve universally accepted (red suit, big beard, house in the north pole, etc.) came to be, and how this version spread to such breadth. The episode is full of tidbits worth listening for, but I’ll give one fact away: the modern image of Santa was created by Thomas Nast, a political cartoonist who incorporated the Santa figure into his works in the 1860s. Her life story is pretty wild; she photographed the greats of the time, like Josephine Baker, Colette, and Gustav Klimt, and worked with Cristobal Balenciaga. Although I didn’t see her exhibit, I’m glad for the serendipitous stumble upon. But like so many thoughts dangerously left unattended, over time it morphed into a belief. It maybe stems from disliking my birthstone, which is ungenerously mundane. We make assocations of grandeur and preciousness with emeralds, rubies, diamonds - even pearls. But not purply durply amethyst! Sure it can be a sparkly feature stone of a boring pendant, but it can also be a giant door stop. Sold in the same shops that have rain sticks and astronaut ice cream. Purple. Does anyone even choose the grape flavor? I was listening to a podcast interviewing Alexa Hampton, a kind of royal in the interior design industry, and she was telling the story of her bedroom reredecoration. She had just finished redecorating after a remodel and admitted that she didn’t like it (!) First of all, it takes a lot of courage to admit something isn’t working. Secondly, it’s a big deal if interior designers get it wrong because we work with VERY high stakes. Does the stone floor still feel slightly off, even after sketches, renders, on-site finish selection? Too bad. The cost of what we do doesn’t make iteration possible- a very strong tool for an artist. In this case, Hampton was able to overhaul it because she was her own client. And WOW. The risk repaid in dividends. It is hands down, one of my favorite bedrooms I’ve ever seen in print. She actually changed very little - the magic happened all becase of color. Which color? Purple. I have pored over this design. It wasn’t lost on me that I would never have tried because I ruled out purple and what a loss! I don’t dislike purple.
